Does Ethnic Diversity Portend the Disuniting of America...
Does Ethnic Diversity Portend the Disuniting of America? Whether or not ââ¬Å"The First Universal Nationâ⬠of Ben Wattenberg (Buchanan 466) fixes its meaning? Despite it is in law, not all people have the same point-of -view about it in practice. George M. Fredricksonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Models of American Ethnic Relations: A Historical Perspectiveâ⬠and Patrick J. Buchananââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Deconstructing Americaâ⬠essays are typical exemplars. Fredrickson and Buchanan are famous politicians. ââ¬Å"Race in USâ⬠is one of popular topics of Fredrickson who used to serve as the ââ¬Å"president of the Organization for American Historians and Stanford Universityâ⬠(Fredrickson 449). Buchanan is ââ¬Å"one of the most influential and outspoken conservative voices in the USâ⬠¦ and has campaigned forâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In my opinion, many people, especially foreigners, immigrants, etc also give their hope for the cultural pluralism which ââ¬Å"is healthy and normal condition that does not preclude equal ri ghts and the mutual understanding about civic responsibilities needed to sustain a democratic nation-stateâ⬠(Fredrickson 455). While Fredrickson supports for a diversity society, Buchanan rejects it. His assessment seems to be obviously different, as he proclaims: ââ¬Å"If we have no common faith and are divided by morality and cultures, and are separated by ethnicity and race, what holds us together? Especially in light of Putnamââ¬â¢s report that ââ¬Ëdiversityââ¬â¢ dilutes ââ¬Ësocial capitalââ¬â¢, erodes community, and engenders mutual mistrust.â⬠(Buchanan 472) Buchanan trembles for America. According to him, since we open our borders in the last forty years to people of all creeds, cultures, countries, and civilizationsâ⬠(Buchanan 466), we ââ¬Å"threw awayâ⬠the old and unique culture, religion, tradition, and history (Buchanan 468). Besides, Buchanan agrees with John Jay that American are no longer as ââ¬Å"one united people, one connected country, brethren, of common bloodâ⬠(Buchanan 467).
